It boasts some <strong>85 open-air statues<\/strong>, which can be discovered throughout the city. <\/p><p>It is the birthplace of many artists, including <strong>Antoine Watteau<\/strong>. He is a major figure in art history, known for his invention of the &#8220;f\u00eates galantes&#8221;, a unique genre combining drama, poetry and melancholy. <\/p><p>He is renowned for his keen sense of observation and his expression of the fragility and transience of love and life. He painted L&#8217;Embarquement pour Cyth\u00e8re and embodied an artistic transition between the austerity of Louis XIV and the elegant dreams of the 18th century. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7011707 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7011707\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79a295c elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"79a295c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>At the heart of industrial heritage<\/h2><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6 col-lg-6\"><p>In 1720, miners from the Nord region discovered the first coal seam at Fresnes, near <strong>Valenciennes<\/strong>. This discovery marked the beginning of industrialization in the region, with the creation of the Anzin company. <\/p><p>The discovery transformed the region&#8217;s landscape and economy, leading to <strong>rapid industrialization<\/strong> and spectacular population growth. The Bassin minier du Nord, a vast underground deposit unique in Europe, stretches over 120 kilometers and left a lasting mark on the history of Fresnes, where 46 shafts were mined until 1947. <\/p><p>Since 2012, this area has been a <strong>UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, on May 22, 1940, a 14-day fire destroyed some of the city&#8217;s finest heritage.   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourismevalenciennes.fr\/sortir-a-valenciennes\/patrimoine-decouverte-du-valenciennois\/1940-valenciennes-brule-4311583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>12% of the town&#8217;s buildings were destroyed, including many public buildings: the town hall and its museum, the 18th-century municipal theater and its interior decoration by Lucien Jonas, the Gustave Crauck museum, the octroi office, the gendarmerie, the prison and the fish market.<\/em><\/a><\/p><p>During the Great War, almost 90% of the town was destroyed. After many years of reconstruction, the town has preserved its identity and heritage. <strong>The town hall<\/strong> was one of the first buildings to be rebuilt. In the Middle Ages, it testified to the city&#8217;s economic and administrative importance, and is now the center of the city&#8217;s public and cultural life.  <\/p><\/div><\/div><p> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-604a029 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"604a029\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3f5226 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e3f5226\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Valenciennes <\/strong>and the Hainaut region are full of surprises.
